In this episode of Meals from the Sunnah, we learn how to make How to make نبيذ (Nabidh) date water, which was a favourite drink of the Prophet ﷺ.

It was narrated that Anas said:  Umm Sulaim had a wooden cup and she said “I gave the Messenger of Allah all kinds of things to drink in it: Water, honey, milk and Nabidh.”

Ibn ‘Abbas reported that Nabidh was prepared for Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) in the waterskin, Shu’ba said: It was the night of Monday. He drank it on Monday and on Tuesday up to the afternoon, and If anything was left out of it he gave it to his servant or poured it out.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of dried dates
  • 4 cups of water

Method 

  1. Soak overnight, 
  2. Strain and drink at pre-dawn meal or at iftar.
  3. Never leave drink more than 2 days (otherwise it will ferment and eventually become alcoholic)
