The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammad has just won a defamation case against Nationwide News Pty Limited regarding an article published by the Daily Telegraph late last year. In the article, Daily Telegraph accused the Grand Mufti of not condemning the Paris terror attacks and not doing enough to prevent extremism. The article created quite an uproar in the Muslim community, considering it was an attack on the highest standing Islamic figure in the country. Many Muslims took to social media shortly after the article was released to express their support for the Grand Mufti, with the hashtag #IStandWithTheMufti trending within the community. Today, the Supreme Court of NSW gave a verdict in his favour. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) have welcomed the decision stating that “It is hoped that the outcome of the proceedings is the first step towards improved harmony between Australian Muslims and the media in the future.” The Mufti has also thanked the community for their support.
