The holy month of Ramadan witnessed remarkable events that shaped Islamic history. From divine revelations to pivotal battles, Ramadan became a stage for momentous occasions. Here are 5 significant historical events in Ramadan.
1. The Quran’s Revelation
In the year 610 CE, a life-altering event transpired during the last ten days of Ramadan. In what would become known as one the most significant events in Islam, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the Quran’s first verses from Angel Gabriel in the cave of Hira. Notably, the divine command “Read” laid the foundation for Islam. This marked the start of his prophetic mission.
2. Conquest of Mecca: Forgiveness Triumphed
Two decades later, in 630 CE, the Conquest of Mecca took place during Ramadan. Muslims peacefully returned to Mecca after having been exiled and chased away for almost a decade with minimal bloodshed. Consequently, this defining moment led to the widespread acceptance of Islam in Arabia. The Prophet Muhammad demonstrated key virtues – mercy and forgiveness.
3. The Battle of Badr
On the 17th day of Ramadan in 624 CE, one of the most significant battles in Islamic history took place, the Battle of Badr. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led a small congregation of just 313 Muslims against the powerful Quraish tribe of over 1,000 men. However, their unwavering faith and strategy led to triumph. As a result, this resounding victory paved the way for Islam’s future expansion.
“Indeed, Allah made you victorious at Badr when you were ˹vastly˺ outnumbered. So be mindful of Allah, perhaps you will be grateful.”
Quran 3:123
4. Treaty of Hudaybiyyah
Moreover, during Ramadan, negotiations took place in the dry plains of Hudaybiyyah between Muslims and adversaries. With the goal of seeking peace amid tensions, the Hudaybiyyah Treaty emerged which enabled reconciliation, allowing Islam to flourish. This treaty allowed the Muslims to return for Hajj known as the first pilgrimage.
5. Jerusalem’s Liberation
In Ramadan 1187, Salahuddin al-Ayyubi aimed to reconquer Jerusalem from the Crusaders. His troops surrounded the city occupied by Crusader forces. Eventually, combining military skill and determination, Saladin liberated Jerusalem. His triumph exemplified chivalry, tolerance and a quest for justice.
These inspiring events offer virtues and wisdom that still inspire humanity today. Whether forgiveness, valour, spiritual enlightenment or the pursuit of justice, each one gives us a lesson to learn.
