The most common misconception about Islam in Africa is that it had arrived relatively late in Islamic history. Not only is this false, however, but native Africans were some of the first non-Arabs to embrace Islam.
Early on during the Khilafah of Umar Ibn Al Khattab and Uthman ibn Affan Islam had already spread to the Maghreb (North-West Africa) nearly reaching the shores of the Atlantic sea. After which the native Berbers played an essential role in spreading Islam throughout Africa and expanding the Islamic Caliphate to Spain. They took it upon themselves as Muslims to spread the Dawah and took ownership of their religion just as the Arabs did in Arabia. We must familiarise our selves with Islamic history as it is apart of our Identity as Muslims.
