The Farewell Sermon of the Prophet ﷺ
Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ only performed one Hajj, the”Farewell Hajj” (Hajj Al-Wadah) and he ﷺ passed away shortly after.
During his Farewell Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ delivered his last sermon (Khutbah) on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah ,10 years after Hijrah (migration to Madinah), in the Uranah Valley of mount Arafat.
Here are 8 key points from this immensely important sermon:
The awareness of satan
“Satan has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things”
The Importance of Da’wah
“O People, lend me an attentive ear, and take these words to those who could not be present here today”
Sacredness of life and property
“Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you”
Accountability before Allah
“Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.”
The prohibition of interest
“All usury is abolished, but your capital belongs to you. Wrong not and you shall not be wronged.”
Kindness towards women
“Indeed you [men] have rights over women, but they also have rights over you… fear Allah in respect to women, and concern yourselves with their welfare.”
Racial equality
“There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a white over a black, nor of a black over a white, only in God-consciousness (taqwa).”
Islam being the final and complete religion
“O people, no prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born… I have left you with something which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Prophet.”
The Prophet ended his sermon by saying;
“Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”
The final verse of the Qur’an was then revealed to him and he recited it to the people:
“This day, I have completed your religion for you, perfected My blessings upon you, and am pleased with Islaam as your Religion.”
[Qur’an 5:3]
May Allah make us from the followers of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ!
