In this OnePath Podcast we are joined with Dr. Shaykh Hatem al-Haj, a distinguished Islamic scholar and practising paediatric hospitalist, we delved into the evolving landscape of Islamic governance, particularly in light of the recent developments in Syria. Dr Al-Hajj shared his insights on the potential emergence of an Islamically inclined government in Syria, the integration of democratic principles within Islamic governance and the importance of patience and understanding in both medical and religious contexts.
The Syrian Context: A Turning Point
Dr Al-Hajj described the recent events in Syria as a significant upheaval, likening them to an avalanche or earthquake. He expressed optimism about the possibility of establishing an Islamic government in Syria, viewing it as the beginning of a positive transformation, inshaAllah. This perspective underscores the potential for Syria to serve as a catalyst for broader changes in the Muslim world, inspiring hope for governance rooted in Islamic principles.
Democracy and Shura: Harmonising Governance
A notable point in our discussion was the incorporation of voting and democratic processes into the governance of Syria. Dr Al-Hajj questioned why such practices are often viewed as foreign, emphasising that consulting the people is intrinsic to righteous Islamic governance. He highlighted that historical Islamic leaders endeavoured to consult their communities, aligning with the concept of shura (consultation). This alignment challenges the notion that democracy is inherently Western, suggesting that Islamic governance can harmoniously integrate democratic elements without compromising its foundational principles.
Reassessing the Khilafah: Beyond Romanticism
We also explored the contemporary Muslim community’s perception of the khilafah (caliphate). Dr Al-Hajj acknowledged that there is a tendency to over-romanticise the concept, reminding us that past caliphs were human beings, not infallible figures. Some were righteous, while others were less so. This realistic appraisal encourages Muslims to appreciate the historical khilafah without idealising it, fostering a more nuanced understanding that can inform current aspirations for Islamic governance.
Patience: A Virtue in Medicine and Faith
Drawing from his medical practice, Dr Al-Hajj identified patience as a crucial virtue cultivated through his work with children. He noted that dealing with young patients requires significant patience, as they often cannot articulate their ailments clearly. This experience in medicine translates into his scholarly work, where patience is equally essential. He referenced the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) tradition of prophets tending to sheep, symbolising the development of patience—a quality vital for both shepherds and leaders.
Life and Death: Insights from Medicine
Dr Al-Hajj’s medical career continually exposes him to matters of life and death, providing him with a profound awareness of life’s transient nature. This perspective enhances his understanding of Islamic teachings on the temporality of worldly existence and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter. Such insights enrich his approach to both his medical practice and religious scholarship, allowing him to navigate the complexities of modern challenges while upholding Islamic principles.
To Summarise
Our conversation with Dr Hatem Al-Hajj offered valuable perspectives on the intersection of Islamic governance, democratic principles and personal virtues like patience. His reflections encourage a balanced understanding of Islamic history and governance, advocating for an approach that honours tradition while engaging thoughtfully with contemporary realities. As Muslims worldwide observe the developments in Syria, Dr Al-Hajj’s insights provide a framework for considering how Islamic principles can inform governance in the modern world.
