Spread Greetings of Peace
Asalamu `Alaykum, such a simple greeting that Muslims give to one another but one of the most rewarding deeds that a Muslim can do.
The meaning of this simple yet beautiful greeting is, peace be upon you. This is the greeting 1.6 billion Muslims use around the world.
Yet at times when we see a fellow brother or sister walking we are to shy to give salam, which needs to change.
Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷻ said,
“As-Salam (peace) is one of the names of Allah Almighty which Allah has placed in the Earth. Therefore give the greeting among yourselves.”
Al Adab Al Mufrad
Giving salams is such a rewardable deed that we should share it and encourage a small deed like this, as it is important to love for your brother what you love for yourself.
It was narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said,
“O Abu Hurairah, be cautious, and you will be the most devoted of people to Allah. Be content, and you will be the most grateful of people to Allah. Love for people what you love for yourself, and you will be a (true) believer. Be a good neighbour to your neighbors, and you will be a (true) Muslim.”
Sunan Ibn Majah
It Is A Muslims Right
When you give salam to your fellow Muslims you spread love and brotherhood, it is also a duty upon a Muslim, if given salams to return salams.
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him), said that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every Muslim has five rights over another Muslim (i.e., he has to perform five duties for another Muslim): to return the greetings, to visit the sick, to accompany funeral processions, to accept an invitation, to respond to the sneezer [i.e., to say: ‘Yarhamuk-Allah (may Allah bestow His Mercy on you),’ when the sneezer praises Allah].”
Sahih Muslim and Muslim
Remember to always give salams to your Muslim brother or sisters whether you know them or not.
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be with you.
