Is growing a beard just a fashion statement for Muslims? Why do Muslims grow beards? And turbans, what’s that about?

Well…

The beard and the turban were part of the outward appearance of the Prophet ﷺ! As a result, they are two very important symbols of Islam. Just the simple act of growing a beard and donning a turban is a form of worship to Allah ﷻ !

24/7 Rewards!

Did you know that there’s an act of worship that constantly rewards you for every second of the day?

By growing a beard, we are obeying a command of the Prophet ﷺ. It is narrated by Ibn Umar(ra) that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Cut the mustaches short and leave the beard (as it is).

Bukhari

By obeying the command of the Prophet ﷺ, every second is recorded as an act of worship by the angels!

The Path of Love

But not only that! It’s a well known fact that we emulate the people that we love. By growing our beard and adopting the clothes of the Prophet ﷺ, we follow in the path of our Prophet ﷺ and show our love for him.

Allah ﷻ  says in the Quran: “Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ ‘If you ˹sincerely˺ love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’”

Quran 3:31

The renowned scholar, Ibn Kathir, states in his commentary about this verse

“This honorable Ayah judges against those who claim to love Allah, yet do not follow the way of Muhammad…”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

It was the practice of the Sahaba and the generations that came after to emulate the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ down to even the minutest detail! By doing so, we increase in our love for the Prophet ﷺ who once said about Jannah:

“The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “What have you prepared for it?” The man said, “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “You will be with those whom you love.”

Sahih Bukhari

So, are you thinking about growing a beard now?
