The scholars have mentioned certain etiquettes, certain Adab that should be done when calling onto Allah.
For example, it is recommended that a person be in a state of Tahara, in a state of Wudu.
It is recommended that a person faced the qiblah, the direction of prayer, it is recommended to raise one’s hands.
And also to try and bring out this humility that you have in you before Allah ﷻ that what you are trying to say is oh Allah, I am weak.I am full of shortcomings.
I am confessing my shortcomings before You O Allah and you are all able, you are the all Magnificent, the almighty, the all-merciful.
Oh Allah, I am raising my hands before you, I am in need of you so Oh Allah respond to my Dua.
Then, how do we begin our Dua? What are some opening words that we should be using in our Dua?
The Prophet ﷺ taught us.
He saw once on one occasion a Man, that was making Dua in his Prayer, so this man, he did not praise Alla and he did not make Salah upon the prophet ﷺ.
So the Prophet ﷺ said regarding this man that he has deficiency in his Dua.
Then when that man finished his prayer he taught him.
The Prophet ﷺ taught him how to make a proper Dua.
He said oh so and so, when you want to ask of Allah, begin by praising Allah ﷻ, by praising him, by thanking him for what he has given you, then also make Salah upon me.
And then, ask for what you want. If you do this, then you Dua be accepted.
Also, we should finish our Dua in the same manner.
So, I’ve begun my Dua by praising Allah alhamdulillah, I have sent my Salawat upon the prophet ﷺ. I’ve said Allahumma Salli ‘ala sayidina Muhammad. And then I ask for what I want, and then towards the end of the Dua, I end it in a similar manner.
I praise Allah ﷻ once again and I send Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
The scholars said if you do this, what you have done is you’re guaranteed, you’re assured that your praise of Allah is accepted, your Salat that you have made to the prophet ﷺ is accepted at the beginning of your Dua andthe end of the Dua and they say Allah SWT is Akram, is more generous than to reject what is between those two.
So saying that you have begun your Dua with that, You’ve ended it with that, whatever you have asked for in between that, inshaAllah, You have Husn At-than in Allah.
You have good opinion that Allah subhanahu wa’ta’ala will accept what you have asked for.
Then also, what should my state, the state of my heart be when I call onto Allah subhanahu wa’ta’ala?
I should do so first of all, like we mentioned in a humble manner, submissive Manner.
And also another important and essential ingredient in my Dua being accepted, is that I have complete conviction in Allah, that Oh Allah, I have complete conviction that you are able to give me what I have asked for.
Oh Allah you are my God, I am your slave, I have done my part Oh Allah, as you have promised me in your book, that you will respond to the ones that call unto you.
O Allah fulfill your promise.
You have this conviction in your heart, if you have this, guaranteed your Dua will be accepted. You should have complete conviction that your Dua now has been accepted.
Now, when we say your Dua is being accepted, doesn’t mean that straight away, that you know, what you ask for is going to come to you, no.
You should know that it will come either sooner or later, in this world or in the Hereafter.
So these are some simple etiquettes to keep in mind when we call on to Allah subhanahu wa’ta’ala.
Also, what are some of the don’ts, Don’t do’s, of Dua.
As it’s come in also a very famous incident. The Prophet ﷺ describes a traveler. You know, this traveler that is, you know, in a very disheveled manner . His hair is everywhere and he’s got dust all over him and then he calls onto Allah.
But his Dua is rejected.
And then the Prophet ﷺ he says how can Allah ﷻ respond to such a person when his, his food, or his sustenance is from a haram source, and his clothing that he is wearing is from a Haram source, and everything that he is doing is Haram.
So the Prophet ﷺ said such a person, his Dua will not be accepted.
So we try also our best to live a Halal life. To make sure that the income that I have is from a Halal source. Make sure what I am getting upto is pleasing to Allah.
These are also essentials to keep in mind when you call unto.
When we call unto Allah and we’re asking, what should we be asking Him for?
If I had a variety of things to ask Allah of, what should I be focusing on most of?
If we go to the Quran Al-Kareem and we take our guidance from the Quran Al-Karim, we find that Allah, You know, as the scholars they say, one of the main subjects that are discussed in the Quran Al-Karim are the stories of the prophets.
Why Allah subhanahu wa’ta’ala mentions the stories of the prophets is that we can take lessons from their lives.
So we find in the stories of the prophets that many of their supplications that they made to Allah subhanahu wa’ta’ala are mentioned to us.
For us, for a Believer, he should see this as a guideline.
This is what these Prophets of Allah are the most beloved Creations to Allah. And what they ask for is most beloved to Allah.
And the most comprehensive of these Dua’s that our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was taught by Allah ﷻ is the famous Dua that we all probably heard of and memorized
ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب النار
This Dua used to be beloved to the prophet ﷺ.
He would make it a lot and it’s pretty comprehensive. What you are asking of Allah is the good of the Hereafter, the good of this world and that Allah ﷻ saves you from the Hellfire and anything that leads to the Hellfire.
So a very comprehensive Dua.
So we take it upon ourselves to make this Dua with a lot of intentions, make it with the intention that Allah ﷻ gives you the good of the Hereafter, the good of this world and also not only for yourself, but for the whole Ummah of the Prophet ﷺ.
You make it with the intention that Allah ﷻ gives all of your brothers and sisters in Islam a good life in this world and in the Hereafter.
So we ask Allah to make this blessed month a month full of barakah, a month full of acceptance and a month full of forgiveness.
