Five Qualities of a Good Friend

The quality of the friends we choose to spend time with is what helps us to shape a beneficial path ahead. If we don’t choose our companions carefully we might find ourselves going down a dangerous path and it becomes harder for us to get out of that poisonous environment. We should pick our friends wisely and make sure that they are from amongst those who enjoin good and forbid evil. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“A man is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.” (Al-Tirmidhi- Hadith Hasan)

So here are five qualities to look for in a good friend

They should be Intelligent

Companionship with someone who lacks intellect will bring you zero benefit, and it will most likely end in isolation and separation.

Imam ‘Ali r.a. said: How often an ignorant man has brought destruction to a forbearing man who has befriended him.

They should have good character

Someone with good character is able to control himself when he is angry and not be over-excited when he desires something.

‘Alqama al-’Utaridi r.a. said: Be the companion of one who will support something good proceeding from you, but will stop an evil being done by you.

They should be pious

Do not be the companion of one who persists in major sins and does not fear God, as this person’s attitude towards you will change according to his luck and conditions.

“…And Do not follow him whose mind We have caused to be neglectful of remembrance of Us and who follows his passions, and whose ways are ever in neglect.” – (Quran 18:28)

They should not be greedy

Human nature is such that people tend to resemble those they spend time with, gaining their character traits unknowingly.

Therefore, spending time with someone who is greedy will encourage greed in you, whereas a generous friend will encourage generosity in you as well.

They should be truthful

People who lie bring much harm and suffering to their companions, and break the foundations of trust between brothers and sisters which uphold society.

“It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to paradise.” – Sahih Muslim

May Allah bless Real Friends and always send pious companions our way!
