How the Prophet <\/span>\ufdfa responded to insults.<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the most common attempts to undermine the character, and therefore the message, of the Prophet <\/span>\ufdfa, is the claim that he overcame his foes with terror, only to rule them with cruelty.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most powerful remedy we have to such claims is the countless examples of the Prophet \ufdfa not only looking past the insults and attacks that came his way, but time and time again responding with something even better, as a living example of the Qur\u2019anic verse:<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are 6 examples of this beautiful character that billions have emulated throughout history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The insults of Arwa bint Harb, the wife of Abu Lahab<\/span><\/h2>\n

Arw\u00e2 b. Harb (also known as Um Jameel, the wife of Abu Lahab) would follow the Prophet \ufdfa around to hurt and humiliate him and used to taunt him, \u201cMudhammam (the dispraised) we have denied, and his religion we have loathed, and his command we have defied (\u0645\u0630\u0645\u0645 \u0623\u0628\u064a\u0646\u0627\u060c \u0648\u062f\u064a\u0646\u0647 \u0642\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627\u060c \u0648\u0623\u0645\u0631\u0647 \u0639\u0635\u064a\u0646\u0627)!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of responding to her, he \ufdfa would simply find solace in saying to his Companions, \u201cDon\u2019t you see how Allah diverts from me the curses and insults of Quraysh? They insult Mudhammam, and they curse Mudhammam, while I am Muhammad (the Praised One)!\u201d<\/span> He quickly calmed the situation and found optimism at a time where it seemed impossible to detect a silver lining. <\/span><\/p>\n

We, too, should see that the cartoons and drawings that people claim to be his likeness are in fact far removed from our beloved Prophet \ufdfa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeking Allah\u2019s guidance, not wrath, for the people of Daws<\/span><\/h2>\n

When Tufayl b. Amr ad-Dawsi (ra) first visited Mecca he was fearful of being bewitched by the Prophet \ufdfa and even placed cotton in his ears while circling the Ka\u2018ba. Nevertheless, he embraced Islam shortly thereafter. <\/span><\/p>\n

When he carried this message back to his people, however, they shunned him and adamantly refused. Abu Hurayra (ra) reports that Tufayl b. \u2018Amr (ra) then traveled back to the Prophet \ufdfa and said,<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Tufail bin `Amr came to the Prophet (\ufdfa) and said, “The Daus (nation) have perished as they disobeyed and refused to accept Islam. So invoke Allah against them.” But the Prophet (\ufdfa) said, “O Allah! Give guidance to the Daus (tribe) and bring them (to Islam)!”<\/p>\n

Nearly a decade later, Tufayl b. \u2018Amr (ra) migrated with eighty families\u2014now Muslims\u2014to Madinah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting the trusts of all his persecutors<\/span><\/h2>\n

When the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa migrated from Mecca, he had many of his persecutors\u2019 belongings with him for safekeeping. His integrity was never compromised, even though these individuals had expelled his Companions and subjected them to persecution. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018\u00c2\u2019isha (ra) said, \u201cHe \ufdfa instructed \u2018Ali (ra) to stay behind in Mecca, in order to return all the trusts the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa had for people. There was nobody in Mecca (even his enemies!) who had valuables that he feared for except that he kept them with the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa, due to the honesty and trustworthiness that was known [to all] about him. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, \u2018Ali (ra) stayed back for three days and three nights to deliver everything entrusted by the people to the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa back to them, and then caught up with him \ufdfa after completing that task.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Teaching and practising the highest standards<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite the Quran affirming that the insults of Quraysh<\/span> tightened his chest with pain, he \ufdfa never stooped to reciprocating in kind. In fact, he inevitably took the higher road of not responding at all, hopeful that this would one day penetrate their harsh hearts, following Allah\u2019s injunction to: <\/span><\/p>\n

Qur\u2019an<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On one occasion, the Prophet \ufdfa silently smiled when Abu Bakr (ra), his most noble Companion, refrained from responding to a person who was insulting him. But when Abu Bakr (ra) eventually spoke up, the Prophet \ufdfa became angry and left. <\/span><\/p>\n

He \ufdfa later explained, \u201cAn angel was with you, responding on your behalf. But when you said back to him some of what he said, a devil arrived, and it is not for me to sit with devils.\u201d The Prophet \ufdfa taught thereby that when a person stoops to the level of those who insult them they allow the devil to steer their course.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday is the day of mercy, no blame is upon you.\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Muslims ride into Mecca after the conquest, led by the Prophet \ufdfa, who kept his head lowered out of humility for Allah to the point that his beard almost touched his saddle. It reached him \ufdfa that some were saying, \u201cO Abu Sufy\u00e2n, today is the day of [your people\u2019s] slaughter. Today, the Ka\u2018ba is not a sanctuary.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

In response, he \ufdfa announced, \u201cRather, this is the day in which Allah will glorify the Ka\u2018ba, and the day when the Ka\u2018ba will be garbed.\u201d In another narration: \u201cToday is the day of mercy. Today Allah will honor Quraysh.\u201d After securing the city, everyone gathered before the Prophet \ufdfa at the Ka\u2018ba, and he asked them tenderly, \u201cO gathering of Quraysh, what do you think I will do to you?\u201d They said, \u201cOnly good, [O] noble brother, son of a noble brother.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Ending the moment of suspense, he \ufdfa declared, \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Joseph said, \u201cThere is no blame on you today. May Allah forgive you! He is the Most Merciful of the merciful!<\/p>\n

Go, for you are unbound.\u201d The Prophet \ufdfa rose above it all, immortalizing himself with this grace in one of the most remarkable events in human history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Responding to physical attacks with a smile<\/span><\/h2>\n

I was walking with Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) who was wearing a Najrani cloak with a very thick border when a bedouin happened to meet him. He took hold of the side of his cloak and drew it violently. I noticed that the violence of jerk had bruised the neck of Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa). The bedouin said: “O Muhammad! Give me out of Allah’s wealth that you possess.” Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) turned to him and smiled and directed that he should be given something.<\/p>\n

I looked at the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa\u2019s neck, and the cloak\u2019s collar had left marks from how roughly he had snatched [it]. Then, he said, \u2018O Muhammad, order [them] that I be given from the wealth of Allah that you have!\u2019 The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa turned to him, smiled, and then ordered that he be given something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
