2GB radio host Chris Smith has caused outrage yet again..<\/span><\/h1>\n2GB host Chris Smith seems to have a problem with Islam. And it’s getting uglier and uglier.<\/span>\n\nEarlier this month he had a conversation with Channel 9’s Prue Macsween about Sudanese-Australian Yassmin Abdel-Magied in which Macsween said she didn’t give the “flea [Abdel-Magied] a second-thought”<\/span>\n\n“If I saw her I’d be tempted to run her over”, Macsween said over Smith’s exuberant laugh.<\/span>\n\nSmith later denied that he had heard what she had said, and Macsween refused to apologise, claiming that people had now “lost their sense of humour.”<\/span>\n\nHowever on Monday Smith went a step further and called for a complete suspension of all Muslims working in airports.<\/span>\n\n“Yes, it’s a discriminatory rule,” he acknowledged. “Most of those men and women are doing the right thing, working and providing for their families, but there is only one link to radical Islamic insiders working for IS, and that’s the Islamic religion.”<\/span>\n\nThis comes in the wake of an alleged terrorism plot involving Four Surry Hills men arrested last week, one of whom has been released without charge.<\/span>\n\nThe Islamophobia Register of Australia has filed a complaint with 2GB, as well as the Australian Communications and Media Authority, pointing out that Smith’s comments may have breached Section 2.1 of the Commercial Radio Code of Conduct, which prohibits content which \u00a0“is likely to incite in a reasonable listener, hatred against, or serious contempt for, or severe ridicule of, any person or group of persons because of… religion….”.<\/span>\n\nThe comments themselves contradict the work of leading academics in the field of radicalization studies, like Dr. Arun Kundnani, Professor Olivier Roy, and Kristen Bell, who highlight the minor role religion plays in terrorist recruiting, stressing instead the importance of “social and connection issues” in an Australian context.<\/span>\n
