\u201cWe\u2019re Already Dead Here\u201d: Lessons from Gaza\u2019s Frontlines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We interviewed Dr Muhammad Mustafa, a British-Australian doctor who has travelled to Gaza<\/a> twice during the war. What he shared wasn\u2019t just a story of suffering, but a raw insight into life on the frontline – where hospitals are bombed, children are gunned down in their sleep, and paramedics declare, \u201cWe\u2019re already dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality of Gaza hits harder than any image on a screen. In one of the first scenes Dr Muhammad describes, dogs were eating bodies on the roadside just metres away from lush Israeli farmland. Within minutes of arriving at a Gaza<\/a> hospital, he was helping carry the bodies of an entire family killed in an airstrike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children Without Heads. Parents Hugging Corpses.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dr Muhammad’s voice shook as he recalled carrying the remains of decapitated children. \u201cEven as a grown man,\u201d he said, \u201cI was shaking.\u201d He described having to scoop brain matter back into a child\u2019s skull before the parents saw the body, just to give them a sliver of dignity. One father arrived by donkey cart with his dying children, only for the donkey to urinate on their corpses. \u201cNo one,\u201d Dr Muhammad said, \u201cshould be humiliated like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medical Catastrophe and Impossible Choices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Working in Gaza’s shattered hospitals meant making impossible decisions. Without basic equipment – no ventilators, no suction machines, no morphine – he once had to scoop blood from a patient\u2019s throat with his hands. He recounted a woman who grabbed his leg for help as he worked on another man\u2019s collapsed lung. She died clutching his ankle. \u201cI chose not to help her,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I have to live with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDeath is in the hands of Allah\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before entering Gaza, Dr Muhammad\u2019s own mother wept and told him, \u201cDeath is in the hands of Allah, not Israel.\u201d That sentiment was echoed by a local paramedic who had recovered the bodies of his own colleagues and calmly said, \u201cWe\u2019re already dead here.\u201d But it wasn\u2019t fear that drove them. It was faith – not just in Allah\u2019s plan, but in the value of serving others until the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Cry for Honesty, Not Politics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When asked about Australia\u2019s role, Dr Muhammad didn\u2019t offer political analysis. He simply asked for honesty. \u201cPalestinian children don\u2019t die. They\u2019re slaughtered,\u201d he said. \u201cCutting off food, water and electricity is not \u2018pressure\u2019 – it\u2019s a war crime.\u201d His message to the Prime Minister was simple: \u201cSit down. Talk to me. Help me bring even a cup of water or a lollipop to a child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual Liberation Amid the Horror<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite the trauma, Dr Muhammad says Gaza changed him. \u201cSpiritually, I feel liberated,\u201d he reflected. \u201cWhen you\u2019ve seen death up close, nothing else matters.\u201d He came back unable to rest, driven by a sense of duty to raise awareness. \u201cWe need to humanise these people again,\u201d he said. \u201cEven just a blanket or some cheese – I\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
