World leaders are offering unified prayers for Israel, iconic national landmarks are illuminated in blue and white, and media headlines are dominated by condemnations of Palestinian &#8220;terror.&#8221; The outpouring of solidarity is swift and unequivocal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But amidst this chorus of support, a critical question emerges: Why this narrative, and why now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, the world has witnessed a very different reality for Palestinians, a reality of occupation, displacement, and systematic oppression. For the first time, the occupied have mounted a significant, coordinated resistance against their occupier. This post unpacks the deafening hypocrisy in the global response and calls for a more nuanced understanding of a 75-year-long struggle that is too often ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-tale-of-two-occupations-the-ukraine-vs-palestine-double-standard\">A Tale of Two Occupations: The Ukraine vs. Palestine Double Standard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most jarring inconsistencies in the current international discourse is the stark contrast between the narratives surrounding Ukrainian and Palestinian resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Russia invaded Ukraine, the world rightfully rallied behind the Ukrainian people. Their right to sovereignty and their right to resist a foreign occupier were championed by the very same voices now condemning Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ukrainian Resistance: Lauded as heroic, a justified defence of their homeland, and worthy of billions in international military and financial aid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palestinian Resistance: Framed almost exclusively as unprovoked &#8220;terrorism,&#8221; with little to no context provided about the preceding decades of occupation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This selective application of principles suggests a disturbing double standard. Palestinians, it seems, are expected to forfeit their right to sovereignty and accept life under a system that international human rights organisations have labelled an apartheid state. They are told to tolerate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A crippling 15+ year blockade on Gaza, confining 2.2 million people in what is often called the world&#8217;s largest open-air prison.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The continuous expansion of illegal settlements on their land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The arbitrary detention of men, women, and children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The desecration of sacred sites and repeated invasions by occupying forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While Ukraine is encouraged to &#8220;do your thing, resist,&#8221; Palestinians are effectively told to &#8220;keep it together&#8221; and silently endure. The hypocrisy is deafening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deconstructing-israel-s-right-to-defend-itself\">Deconstructing &#8220;Israel&#8217;s Right to Defend Itself&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The phrase &#8220;Israel has a right to defend itself&#8221; dominates political soundbites. But to understand its full implication, we must ask: defend itself from whom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-david-vs-goliath-reality\">The David vs. Goliath Reality<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a conflict between two equal powers. We are witnessing one of the most powerful, well-funded armies in the world matched against a besieged population with limited resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Israeli Defence Forces (IDF)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Palestinian Militant Groups<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Billions in annual U.S. funding (~$3.8 billion)<\/td><td>Limited external funding, often blocked<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Advanced fighter jets, space assets, and nuclear capabilities<\/td><td>Improvised rockets and basic infantry equipment<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>High-tech armed drones and sophisticated surveillance technology<\/td><td>Commercial drones and hang gliders<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The power imbalance is staggering. Framing this as a symmetrical conflict is not just inaccurate; it is misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-track-record-of-impunity\">A Track Record of Impunity<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond technological superiority, the IDF has a long and documented history of actions that have drawn condemnation from global watchdogs. Numerous reports from organisations like <strong>Amnesty International<\/strong>*, <strong>Human Rights Watch*,<\/strong> and the Israeli human rights group B&#8217;<strong>Tselem <\/strong>have accused Israel of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>War crimes: Including disproportionate attacks on civilian infrastructure like schools and hospitals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing an apartheid system: Systematically oppressing Palestinians through discriminatory laws and land seizures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acting with impunity: Rarely facing international accountability for its actions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As we speak, Gaza&#8217;s electricity has been cut, blacking out hospitals and preventing patients from receiving life-saving treatment. To discuss a &#8220;right to defence&#8221; without acknowledging this history is to ignore the context that fuels the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-case-study-in-hypocrisy-australia-s-contradictory-stance\">A Case Study in Hypocrisy: Australia&#8217;s Contradictory Stance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The double standard is not just a media phenomenon; it&#8217;s deeply embedded in Western politics. Look no further than Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Albanese has spent a significant portion of his political capital campaigning for an Indigenous &#8220;Voice to Parliament.&#8221; His argument is rooted in justice: the marginalised Indigenous people of Australia have suffered for too long at the hands of their European colonisers and deserve to have their voices heard. He has championed this cause in communities across the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, this empathy seems to vanish when the colonisers are not British, but Zionist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When the invaders are not Captain Cook but the Israeli occupying forces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the oppression isn&#8217;t historical chains but a modern-day carpet-bombing campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For Palestinians, there is no call for a &#8220;voice.&#8221; Instead, their occupier is granted the indefinite right to &#8220;defend itself&#8221;, a right that is used to silence that very voice. This stark contradiction from a world leader exemplifies the selective morality applied to this conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-malcolm-x-analogy-you-can-t-heal-a-wound-you-won-t-acknowledge\">The Malcolm X Analogy: You Can&#8217;t Heal a Wound You Won&#8217;t Acknowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There can be no genuine conversation about peace without first addressing the root cause of the violence. The activist Malcolm X articulated this perfectly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;If you stick a knife in my back nine inches and pull it out six inches, there\u2019s no progress. If you pull it out all the way, that\u2019s not progress. The progress is healing the wound that the blow made. And they won\u2019t even admit the knife is there.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The &#8220;knife&#8221; in this scenario is the 75-year-long occupation. It is the illegal settlements, the inhumane siege on Gaza, and the apartheid system.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>To truly advocate for peace, we must first<\/em><\/strong><em>*<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Acknowledge the knife: Recognise the reality of the illegal occupation and the systemic oppression faced by Palestinians.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Remove the knife: Call for an end to the siege, the occupation, and the systems of apartheid.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Heal the wound: Work towards a just, lasting solution that grants Palestinians the same rights to freedom, dignity, and self-determination that we demand for ourselves and for others.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beyond-prayers-to-progress\">Beyond Prayers to Progress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While prayers for peace are well-intentioned, they are meaningless if we conveniently ignore the reality on the ground. True progress cannot begin until the world and its media and political leaders stop applying a dangerous double standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must move beyond selective outrage and demand a consistent application of international law and human rights. Before we speak of peace, we must first demand justice.
