Gone are the days when our mum would bring out the family album once a year to the dinner table. <\/span>Here&#8217;s why you might need a digital detox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From diaper photos to holiday snaps; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatives were able to peep into our special family moments. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We now have the pleasure of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scooping into our peers\u2019 lives the first thing in the morning. Sarah\u2019s son just leaked his nappy twice this morning, Mariam snapshotted her Acai bowl (organic of course) and in the midst of a pandemic Aishah managed to drop six pounds and homeschool her three kids with a newborn. With overwhelming feeds cluttering the mind; are you in need of a digital detox?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some sure ways to plow through a digital detox.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;1. \u2018The Grass is not Greener, It\u2019s Just Fake Grass\u2019&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can these constant notifications influence our emotions? Experts believe so. America\u2019s leading family therapist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.au\/Relationship-Breakthrough-Create-Outstanding-Relationships-ebook\/dp\/B0039RHW6G\">Chloe Madanes<\/a> states that \u2018one of the easiest ways of achieving great unhappiness in life is to compare our lives to others\u2019. And social media does just that. A platform where your life is on display. Parts of your life you want presented of course. Giving the viewer a distorted assumption of one\u2019s day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine we showed a #NoFilters image of our lives. Would we be so courageous to show our daily spats with our spouse, dirty dishes or our toddlers&#8217; tantrums in the supermarket? Instead we show their merit awards, family holidays and roses from our hubby.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Muslims we must ask ourselves; is it truly necessary to display and boast of our dunya? What effect is this having on the state of my heart? Conquering desires and accepting that you already have enough will allow you to live <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/stillness-is-the-key-ryan-holiday\/book\/9781788162050.html?source=pla&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwcGy5JPN5gIVlYePCh18fQJ6EAQYASABEgLvGPD_BwE\">contentedly<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S<em>ocial comparison can also rear its ugly head when we start to compare our bodies and appearance to others, tearing ourselves down in the process.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study out of the UK surveyed 1500 Facebook and Twitter users, finding that 62% of the group reported feeling inadequate and 60% reported feelings of jealousy from comparing themselves to other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/nurturing-self-compassion\/201703\/mental-health-and-the-effects-social-media\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even being the innocent passive Facebook user, or \u201clurker\u201d increased feelings of envy, jealousy, and even resentment toward the network itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie Cook, social media specialist claims \u201cImages are edited and updates are positive and generally depict success, happiness, and milestones and rarely focus on anything <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehealthy.com\/mental-health\/healthy-relationship-with-social-media\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">else<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d If you\u2019re not careful, you might be fooled into thinking that everyone is having a better, happier, more prosperous time than you, whether it\u2019s true or not.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;2. Guard Your Precious Time<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time is also an issue. Time is one of Allah\u2019s creations and it\u2019s management is a life skill that must be learnt. Ibn Mas\u2019ud narrated that the Messenger of Allah <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa said <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u275d<\/span>The feet of the son of Adam shall not move from before his Lord on the Day of Judgement, until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his youth and what he wore it out in, about his wealth and how he earned it and spent it upon, and what he did with what he knew.<\/span>\u275e<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/sunnah.com\/urn\/677210\">Tirmidhi<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if time on our devices is left untamed one can quickly lose control with studies proving that people can spend almost six years of their life on simply viewing social <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/themanifest.com\/social-media\/how-people-use-social-media-2018\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;3. Reclaim Your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationships Not Cyber&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waves of data have shown the correlation between social media and its effects on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personal relationships. Findings reveal that face-to-face social interactions were positively correlated with overall well-being whereas network activity was negatively associated. The results were especially telling when it came to mental health: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u275dMost measures of Facebook use in one year predicted a decrease in mental health in a later year. We found consistently that both liking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theindustryobserver.thebrag.com\/plug-in-tune-out-how-much-social-media-is-too-much\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">others\u2019 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content and clicking links significantly predicted a subsequent reduction in self-reported physical health, mental health and life satisfaction<\/span>.\u275e<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/04\/a-new-more-rigorous-study-confirms-the-more-you-use-facebook-the-worse-you-feel\">Holly Shakya and Nicholas Christakis<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, strengthening our face-to-face relationships has positive effects on our overall mental health.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;4. It\u2019s Time For Rehab&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, with these findings; why are we so attached to these networks? Addiction. Addiction is defined as a condition of being addicted to a substance or activity that negatively interferes with important daily activities such as work and relationships.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to research conducted at Chicago University \u2018social media addiction can be stronger than addiction to cigarettes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/article\/319011\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">booze\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One study recorded the cravings of several hundred people for the duration of a few months. Findings revealed media cravings ranking the highest amongst both cigarettes and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a05. Gratitude is Key\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Sonja Lyubomirsky\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.au\/How-Happiness-Approach-Getting-Life\/dp\/0143114956\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she refers to <a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/the-amazing-rewards-of-patience-and-gratitude\/\">gratitude<\/a> as \u201ca kind of meta-strategy for achieving happiness.\u201d Lyubomirsky\u2019s research demonstrates that expressing gratitude has several benefits. People who are grateful are likely to be happier, hopeful and energetic, and they possess positive emotions more frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet social media breeds desires of higher expectations of beauty, lifestyle, and status <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linking it to dissatisfaction in one\u2019s life. Abu Hurairah r.a. reported that the Messenger of Allah advised us to&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u275dL<\/span>o<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ok at those who are beneath you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the blessing of Allah.\u275e <\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/sunnah.com\/urn\/1292440\">Sunan Ibn Majah<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore Allah advises the believers to practice gratitude:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u0644\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0646 \u0634\u064e\u0643\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0632\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 <\/strong><\/p><p>\u275d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are grateful, I will surely increase you<\/span>\u275e<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/14:7\"><em>Quran 14:7<\/em><\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blessing being in the form of wealth, tranquility, stability or health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often people place unrealistic expectations on this worldly life. Dennis Prager, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happiness is a Serious <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Happiness-Serious-Problem-Nature-Repair\/dp\/0060987359\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlights that expectations undermine gratitude and therefore undermine happiness. \u201cThe more expectations you have, the less gratitude you will have. If you get what you expect, you will not be grateful for getting it.\u201d He suggests lowering expectations, particularly pertaining to circumstances beyond your control, to bring gratitude to fruition. Echoing Tony Robbins famous advice; \u2018Trade your expectation for appreciation\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It&#8217;s Time to Practice Social Detoxing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are well documented benefits of social media and how it has shaped this generation like connecting to family and friends across the world, ocean of information at your fingertips, digital relationships etc. Studies do warn of its link to increased narcissism, decreased self-esteem, relationship breakdowns, ties to depression and overall poor life satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, without migrating to a cocoon, one can enjoy life and continue to have a healthy dose of networking. How? Moderation does it. Experts advise having a Wi-Fi vacation in which you have digital-free times in the day.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When one is able to understand the deceptive nature of social media they can then enhance appreciation in their own lives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unplugging completely from social media seems unrealistic in the modern world but a digital detox can bring immense benefit.
