There seems to be this redundant political and societal discourse about what Muslim women are and what Muslim women \u201cshould\u201d want!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is only expected that w<\/span>e <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might feel a bit confused about where and how we fit in Western societies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think as Muslim women we are fed up of being told what we want, or how we fit in this world with all these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stereotypes and misconceptions in regards to Muslim women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslim women are oppressed! Forced to cover up! They want to be free! We have to help them! Save them from Islam!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if that\u2019s kind of help you\u2019re thinking of, you\u2019re very mistaken. So instead of trying to save us from problems that don\u2019t exist, here are a few ways you can <\/span><b>actually<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Help by providing a space for us to <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BiC2XMCK_Fs\"><b>pray at the workplace<\/b><\/a><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recently saw the case of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/muslim-woman-prayer-break-lawsuit-1461575\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shahin Indorewala<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who requested two 5 minute prayer breaks, only to be faced with racial slurs. There are many stories like Chahin\u2019s, which unfortunately don\u2019t see daylight because the victims feel ashamed to share them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Help by defending our right to choose what we wear&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modesty and chastity are considered virtues in Islam for both men and women. For many <\/span>W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omen their dress code is inseparable from their identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have seen a rise in banning many Muslim attire around the world, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/women\/life\/burka-bans-the-countries-where-muslim-women-cant-wear-veils\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burqa <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/burkini-ban-why-is-france-arresting-muslim-women-for-wearing-full-body-swimwear-and-why-are-people-a7207971.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burkini<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Muslim swimwear). Many countries are trying to dictate how w<\/span>e <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should be dressed in public which is considered a violation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/10\/racism-expert-slams-dutch-burqa-ban-191007185707738.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Help us feel safe in our own country<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been several hate crimes amongst Muslim communities in Western countries, but attacks against women have been the most common.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Muslim women, we carry our religion over our heads, literally, which makes us easier targets for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/victoria\/news\/woman-arrested-charged-after-racist-incident-involving-two-women-and-a-child\/news-story\/73d2194ab1888debf5dba50fec7e9ccd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-1444\/8\/9\/165\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record numbers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of racial abuse against Muslim women since 9\/11.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Help us to speak for ourselves and stop reinforcing the stereotypes<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the late 19th century, Lord Cromer, the British Consul-General to Egypt (1883-1907) announced, \u201cI am here to liberate Muslim women, I am here to liberate them from Islam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The belief that Islam is oppressive towards women is often combined with a desire to rescue Muslim women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s ironic is that this rescue mission is so rigid that Muslim f<\/span>emales <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have no say in whether they wish to be rescued or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fact that many f<\/span>emale<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scholars, social media personalities, Muslim congresswomen, Olympic Athletes have spoken about the matter of the hijab and Muslim women issues in general, the idea that Muslim women are in need of help prevails.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So w<\/span>e<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in <\/span><b>need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of changing these deep-rooted ideologies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Already Know Who Are Our Role Models<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t need to go far for examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/the-great-women-of-islam\/\">empowered Muslim women<\/a>. There are examples from the time of the Prophet\ufdfa and throughout Islamic history.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female companions of the Prophet\ufdfa were <\/span>actuall<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allowed to initiate divorce from their husbands, they were allowed to pursue education, they even complained about domestic violence 1400 years ago!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women During The Time Of The Prophet  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa<\/span> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then not long after the Prophet \ufdfa passed away, a woman from the Tribe of Quraysh stood up on a Friday sermon, and corrected the Caliph at the time, none-other than Omar Ibn AL-Khattab! Upon hearing her argument, Omar rescinded, saying \u201cThe woman is right and Omar is wrong.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women scholars like Aisha and Umm Salamah (both wives of the Prophet Muhammad) engaged in Qur\u2019anic interpretation, especially on verses pertaining to justice or rights of women.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So looking at how long ago these historic events have happened, some dating back 1400 years ago, I say these women knew their Islamic rights and weren\u2019t afraid to fight for them. Islam came at a time where women were treated as commodoties and made them individuals who have their own voice.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no denying that Muslim women, like all other women around the world, might be victims to oppression, however in the West the oppression comes in a form of a war on our identity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Muslim women in the West, our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2019\/mar\/08\/muslim-women-representation-media-politics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is always up for discussion by others and at the mercy of public opinion.<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt;\">So instead of saving us from Islam, why not respect our choices, move past our outer appearances and embrace our differences.<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>_____<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to help Muslim Sisters Muslim women have always been in the media spotlight here, we are always portrayed as victims that are forced to cover up.
