{"id":11276,"date":"2021-06-02T11:40:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T11:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/?p=11276"},"modified":"2026-02-18T05:45:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T05:45:24","slug":"what-is-zakat-al-fitr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/facts\/what-is-zakat-al-fitr\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Fitrah\/ Zakat Al Fitr?"},"content":{"rendered":"<amp-jwplayer layout=\"flex-item\" height=\"600\" data-player-id=\"bKajWAhe\" width=\"700\" data-media-id=\"1LUuN4nx\" class=\"wp-block-amp-amp-jwplayer\"><\/amp-jwplayer>\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Fitra\/ Zakat Al Fitr<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitra or <a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/ramadan-hub\/zakat-calculator\/\">Zakat Al Fitr<\/a> is an obligatory charity that is distributed at the end of the Fast of Ramadan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is obligatory for every Muslim, to be paid on their own behalf and on behalf of their dependents (Wife, children, etc), if they have the means to do so. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Prophet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoined the Zakah of Ramadan on everyone, young and old, free and slave, male and female, a Sa\u2019a of dates or a Sa\u2019a of barley.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sunnah.com\/urn\/1076810\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunan an-Nasa&#8217;i<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Sa\u2019a is a means of calculation at the time of the Prophet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and one Sa\u2019a is equivalent to 3.28 litres, or approximately 2.73 kgs of rice, 2.8kg of wheat, 2.7kg of dates, or 2.4kgs of barley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today you can pay cash the equivalent value of one Sa\u2019a, which is around\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$12 AUD. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one who gives Fitrah is relatively wealthy, it would also be better for him or her to pay more than the amount of a sa&#8217;a&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitrah becomes obligatory on every Muslim from sunset on the last day of fasting until the beginning of the Eid prayer (shortly after sunrise the following day). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this zakat can be paid prior to the above mentioned period, as many of the companions of the Prophet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to pay Fitrah a couple of days before Eid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today\u2019s context, it would be better to pay it even earlier (as long as it is paid within Ramadan) to allow it to reach the needy in far places by Eid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prophet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ufdfa <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made Fitrah compulsory so that those who fasted may be purified of their idle deeds and shameful talk (committed during Ramadan) and so that the poor may be fed. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoever gives it before Eid prayer will have it accepted as Zakat, while he who gives it after the prayer has only given a general Sadaqah.&#8221;
