{"id":10160,"date":"2022-05-04T03:15:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T03:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/?p=10160"},"modified":"2022-08-22T04:43:15","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T04:43:15","slug":"what-are-the-pillars-of-islam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/spirituality\/what-are-the-pillars-of-islam\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the Pillars of Islam?"},"content":{"rendered":"<amp-jwplayer layout=\"flex-item\" height=\"600\" data-player-id=\"bKajWAhe\" width=\"700\" data-media-id=\"Rb3ltBrC\" class=\"wp-block-amp-amp-jwplayer\"><\/amp-jwplayer>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 5 Pillars of Islam<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the pillars of Islam?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa said:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on <strong>five (pillars)<\/strong>, <strong>testifying (the fact) that there is no God but Allah<\/strong>, that <strong>Muhammad is His bondsman and messenger<\/strong>, and <strong>the establishment of daily prayers<\/strong>, <strong>payment of Zakat<\/strong>, <strong>Pilgrimage to the House (Ka&#8217;ba)<\/strong> and the <strong>fast in the month of Ramadan<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/sunnah.com\/muslim\/1\/21\">Muslim<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Islam is based on tenets that are known as the Pillars of Islam, <em>Arkanul Islam<\/em>, to which all Muslims should adhere to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Pillars of Islam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shahada (<a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/six-pillars-imaan-faith\/\">Declaration of Faith<\/a>), Salah (Daily Prayers), Zakat (Charity), Fasting and Hajj Pilgrimage, are the five pillars of Islam and they provide the framework for a Muslim\u2019s life. They develop character, strengthen Islam by uniting Muslims and act as a reminder of the teachings of Islam. Allah commanded Muslims to carry out these duties and follow the\u00a0example of the Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa. Each pillar has its own special importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Shahada (Testimony of Faith)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shahada is a testimony which brings one into Islam, it also must be said with purity of heart and conviction, the statement in Arabic translates to: \u201cThere is no God but God and Muhammad is His Messenger.\u201d It is a profession of faith bearing witness the oneness of God and that Muhammad is a messenger of God. This also implies that all the previous prophets were only messengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where is the Shahada mentioned in the Qur\u2019an?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAllah witnesses that <\/span><b>there is no deity except Him<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge &#8211; [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.\u201d <\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/3:18\">Quran 3:18<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Salah<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/how-to-improve-your-prayer\/\">five daily prayers<\/a> are an obligatory practice for all Muslims who are able to do so. They consist of physical movements such as prostration to God, sending blessings upon Prophets and the recitation of Quranic verses. Praying is a way to communicate, thank and remember Allah. The daily prayers revolve around the stages of the day; dawn, noon, mid-afternoon and sunset.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muslims are required to establish ritual prayers 5 times a day at specified times: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fajr<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: dawn, before sunrise<\/span><\/li><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zuhr<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: midday, after the sun passes its highest<\/span><\/li><li>&#8216;A<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sr<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the late part of the afternoon<\/span><\/li><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maghrib<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: just after sunset<\/span><\/li><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Isha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: between sunset and midnight<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Praying is a way to communicate, thank and remember Allah.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Establish prayer<\/strong>, and pay alms-tax. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will \u02f9certainly\u02fa find \u02f9its reward\u02fa with Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.. <\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/2:110\">Quran 2:110<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Zakat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/the-pillar-of-zakat-abu-adnan\/\">Zakat<\/a> is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one&#8217;s wealth to charity. It is regarded as a type of worship and of self-purification and fosters qualities such as sacrifice and generosity. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zakat is separate from charitable gifts given out of generosity. It is a systematic giving of 2.5% of one&#8217;s wealth each year to benefit the poor.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where is Zakaat mentioned in the Qur\u2019an?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd establish prayer<\/span><b> and give zakah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].<\/span>&#8220;<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/2:43\">Quran 2:43<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Fasting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims <a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/what-is-the-actual-purpose-behind-fasting\/\">fast<\/a> from the break of dawn until sunset. This includes abstinence from food, drink and sexual intercourse. One must also be physically and mentally able to fast. Further, travellers are exempt from fasting. Fasting promotes patience, discipline and increases the purity of the mind and piety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where is fasting mentioned in the Qur\u2019an?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cO you who have believed, <\/span><b>decreed upon you is fasting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous\u201d <\/span><\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/2:183\">Qur&#8217;an 2:183<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Performing Hajj<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilgrimage (<a href=\"https:\/\/onepathnetwork.com\/au\/the-incredible-story-of-hajj-and-prophet-ibrahim\/\">Hajj<\/a>) is an obligation upon every able-bodied and financially capable Muslim, both male and female, to complete the pilgrimage to Mecca.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is completed in Dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The rites of Hajj requires Muslims to dress in white robes known as Ahram, circumnavigate the Ka\u2019ba and venture between the Hills of Safa and Marwa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where is Hajj mentioned in the Qur\u2019an?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAnd <strong>complete the Hajj <\/strong>and &#8216;umrah for Allah&#8230;\u201d<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/quran.com\/2:196\">Quran, 2:196<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><b>May Allah (SWT) make it easy for us to follow and implement these principles.
